Your International Surfing Association (ISA) coach, course presenter and assessor for the Outdoor Activity Instructor Academy will be Barrie ‘Baz’ Hall. With over 25 years of experience within the instructor industry, Baz has the necessary skills and patience to help anybody reach their full potential both on and off the beach.

Originally from Wales, Baz moved to South Devon as a child and developed a passion for surfing not long after. His list of qualifications, experience, air miles, training camps and industry secrets stretch further than Fistral Beach at low tide. Baz has flown to numerous countries the world over in an attempt to uphold the quality of surfing that he has been passionate about since 1976.

Following a personal love affair with the ocean, Baz started to coach surfing in the early 90’s and has since gone on to become one of the most experienced and well-respected instructors in the UK. His long list of coaching titles form an impressive timeline that weaves between country and competition throughout the decades. We think he’s a walking advert for the longevity of such an exciting career. He’s also somebody from who you might want to soak up as much knowledge as possible during the course; experience is priceless!

From 1995 to 2008, Baz was the National Coaching Director and the Head Manager of the British Surfing Association (BSA) National Surfing Centre on Fistral Beach. On top of these roles, between 1996 and 2008 Baz’s experience was internationally recognised and he was signed up as the Head Coach for the British Surfing Team. Running parallel to his responsibilities during these years, Baz also undertook the role of Lead Coach for the Junior Development Squad with the BSA.

Baz has been an ISA/BSA Surf Coach course presenter since 1996 and still has the passion to deliver extraordinary results on a daily basis. When he’s not teaching people to surf, he’s teaching people how to teach people to surf! Surfception! As an ISA Course Presenter Mentor, Baz is responsible for the new wave of course presenters coming through the ranks and into surf schools across the country.

From 2009 to 2019, Baz was the Childrens Coach at the Newquay Surf Lifesaving Club. This essential learning helped to instill a sense of beach safety among the youngest of ocean goers. On top of his extensive surf coaching experience, Baz is also a trained and experienced RNLI Lifeguard and RLSS Beach Lifeguard Assessor.

As you can imagine, Baz’s surfing lifestyle has taken him all across the world to places such as Australia, New Zealand, Europe, California, Morocco, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, the Canary Islands and South Africa. This isn’t unusual for an outdoor instructor, this is part and parcel of chasing the summer seasons around the globe! Enrolling on the Outdoor Activity Instructor Academy could see you jetting off into the sunshine to follow a similar path – who knows where you might end up!

Best memory about the outdoors: Just the feeling of freedom, excitement & exhilaration!
