National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NVBLQ).  Train to become a Beach Lifeguard in Newquay, Cornwall.


What is this course?

The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) has teamed up with Surf Life Savingbeach lifeguard training.

The NVBLQ complies with the International Life Saving Federation beach competency framework. It will be offered by all three organisations and is endorsed by the National Water Safety Forum and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

The NVBLQ will be recognised and promoted by RLSS UK, SLS GB, SLSA Wales as the national standard for vocational beach lifeguarding and is the preferred award of the RNLI.

The NVBLQ course is a minimum of 40 hours long followed by a practical assessment on beach theory, life support, first aid, swimming pool practical and open water practical.

Upon qualifying with the NVBLQ, the certificate is valid for two years from the date of successful completion.

Who is running the course?

Mark Kelly will be heading up this training course..

Mark is a multi qualified, highly experienced and active practitioner in both land and water sports, delivering coaching, guiding, instructing and training in several disciplines. Mark is also a trainer and assessor of Beach Lifeguarding and first aid qualifications for both The Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) and Surf Lifesaving Great Britain.(SLSGB)

Who is allowed to take part?

NVBLQ Course Pre-Requisites

Every candidate attending a NVBLQ course must:

  • Be 16-years-old or over at the time of the assessment
  • Have a good level of fitness
  • Surface dive to a depth of 1.5 metres
  • Tread water for two minutes
  • Climb out of deep water unaided and without steps
  • Be competent at swimming in the sea
  • Be able to swim 400m in less than eight minutes

What will be the next steps when the course is complete?

On successful completion and assessment you will meet the pre – requisites to apply directly to the RNLI and other international lifeguarding bodies to work on their beaches. This award also validates many National Governing Body awards such as ISA  Level 1 Surf Coach and many more. It is also a requirement of many private beaches, hotels and water safety companies. The NVBLQ opens a lot of doors and is  very much a passport for fun, travel and a serious career for those passionate about the ocean and saving lives.
