Re-enact one of Newquay’s historic shipwrecks and use coasteering, Super SUPing and bushcraft skills to survive and tell the tale. To mark the 100th anniversary of a legendary castaway story we have created the Schools Cornwall Castaway experience. Do your pupils have what it takes to survive a shipwreck and relive the folklore of brave lifeboat men? Learn wilderness and coastal survival skills on our historic Cornwall Castaway specially developed for schools!
AS LEGEND HAS IT…
In December 1917 a terrible storm battered the coast of Newquay. The Osten, a local fishing boat got caught in the storm and washed over the notoriously dangerous Cribbar reef – a modern day big wave surfing spot where waves of up to 30-40ft break over shallow jagged rocks.
The lifeboat was launched but quickly capsized. Her sails quickly filled with water meaning she could not self-right and the crew were washed overboard and into the cliffs. Using their local knowledge of the coastline, they traversed their way to the relative safety of a cave known as the Tea Caverns. Do you think you’d have the metal to traverse Newquay’s craggy cliffs while the Atlantic swells crash beneath you?
The storm raged for the following 3 days and 3 nights forcing the crew to weather it out in the cave. The men foraged for seagull eggs, crabs and shellfish and built fires from driftwood to cook and fend off the onset of hypothermia. When the storm finally passed the crew were rescued and awarded RNLI gallantry medals on their return to land. Would you have the knowledge to survive in such an unforgiving environment?
Our expert team of multi-activity instructors and Beach Lifeguards have extensive experience of working with all ages. With us, students are encouraged to push their boundaries whilst safe in a supportive environment.
Your pupils couldn’t be in more experienced or safer hands.
PUTTING WILDERNESS SKILLS TO THE TEST
On arrival at the Newquay Activity Centre one of our experienced instructors will kit you out in a wetsuit, buoyancy aid and helmet and lead you to the beginning of your Castaway adventure.
CHALLENGE ONE: MAKING DRY LAND (COASTEERING)
Shortly after being ‘shipwrecked’, your objective is to make dry land by means of wild sea swimming, traversing your way along rocks, low-level climbing and riding nature’s natural rapids. Allow your pupils to encourage each other and boost confidence with incredible leaps into deep-water plunge pools. Take the healthy competition to the next level and see who has the nerve to go the highest!
CHALLENGE TWO: CAVE SURVIVAL (BUSHCRAFT)
On making it to Dead Man’s Cove, you’ll take on a host of wilderness & adventure survival skills. Here you will forage (toast marshmallows!), collect fuel to build a fire and also learn how to identify our fascinating wildlife with the help of our local and knowledgeable instructors.
CHALLENGE THREE: RAFT ESCAPE (SUPER SUP)
Once bellies are full and energies recharged, it’s time for your students to escape Dead man’s cove. Fortunately for your kids, a life raft (a.k.a our huge Super Stand Up Paddleboard) will be somewhere in the vicinity as a means of escape. Here, working as a team, they’ll learn how to launch & land the castaway raft, perform efficient paddle strokes (both standing up and kneeling down), steer & control the craft and navigate our craggy coastline back to the safety of the shore.
The Cornwall Castaway offers a little bit of everything and more. It is the perfect wilderness & adventure activity for schools in Newquay. It’s not just action, adrenaline and heaps of fun, but your students will walk away having learnt invaluable lifesaving skills and a tall tale to tell for the next 100 years!

WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE IS EXTREME WEATHER?
We are super fortunate to operate many of our activities in the shelter of Towan beach. We choose the tide and weather times that deliver the very best conditions for our school adventure sessions. However, we are at the mercy of Mother Nature and sometimes she may have different plans for us. We always check the forecasted conditions but if the wind or swell picks up unexpectedly, we may need to reduce or remove the time spent on our super sup to avoid dangerous situations. If this happens we will always allow extra time to be spent on the coasteering and bushcraft elements of the session.
Over 95% of our tours go ahead unaffected by the weather but, in the unlikely event that this does happen, we have excellent back-up options for you to choose from. If we need to amend your school trip activity due to adverse weather, we will let you know in advance. (No need to call us). We appreciate your understanding.
