ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Course

Become an internationally recognised qualified surfing instructor
Duration: 2 days
Industry standard for surf coaching around the world
Location: Newquay Activity Centre HQ + Towan Beach

The ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Award is the industry standard for teaching surfing in the UK and around the world. Turn your passion into a profession and get paid to do what you love. Spend your days in the great outdoors and join our experienced team of surf industry professionals to learn the surf-specific skills required for a career in surf instructing!

The International Surfing Association (ISA) level one qualification focuses on the coaching of beginner to intermediate level surfers. Not only will you gain the correct technical and safety skills, you will also learn the soft skills needed to effectively instruct new students. This comprehensive course will allow you to support, teach, encourage and adapt your lessons to suit the needs of your students.

Ideally you will have a few years of personal surfing experience under your belt and also have a passion for teaching others about the benefits of the ocean. What do you wish you had when you were learning to surf? Maybe you can be the difference for somebody else and introduce them to the exciting world of surfing.

This course will teach you everything you need to know in order to safely and competently deliver professional surfing lessons. As part of working with members of the public in the water, you are required to also hold a recognised surf lifesaving qualification.

You may obtain your surf lifesaving qualification before or after taking part in the ISA Level 1 Surf Coaching Award, it’s up to you. However, you will need one of the following before starting work as a surf instructor:

  • 16+ years of age
  • Personal surfing experience
  • Intermediate surfing ability
  • Recognised Surf Lifesaving Award

Once the course has been successfully completed, surf instructors must do 20 hours of supervised surf instruction or, alternatively,  provide documented Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) signed off by a guided supervisor. Newquay Activity Centre gives course graduates the opportunity to complete their 20 hours of practical supervised instruction with our friendly and experienced team. This will give you the chance to experience what it’s like working at a surf school, with the added benefit of a familiar environment and some friendly faces.

On top of the opportunity for shadowing hours, you will also be offered an interview for a paid position as a newly qualified surfing instructor! We’ve tried to make it as straightforward as possible for you to enter the new world of surf coaching; all of the processes are in place, it’s then down to you to grab the opportunity with both hands!
