The River Gannel - the perfect environment to learn how to SUP
The calm waters of the Gannel estuary make it a perfect spot to learn how to SUP. With no waves to negotiate, you’ll find the river environment easier to paddle and maneuver. You’ll learn essential paddling techniques to enjoy maximum glide time. Your instructor will guide you through how to use the weather and tides to cross the river, and kit you up with everything you need to feel safe and reassured, should you fall off your SUP.
Scour the overhanging tree branches in the lagoon at Penpol Creek, where you’ll forage for a wild mushroom called ‘wood ear.’ It’s totally edible so you’ll get to try it! Paddling further round, you’ll source an unusual flora species known as ‘sea celery’ - something you’re more likely to find in Australia and New Zealand.
Local food produce is a big thing in Cornwall. Many Cornish restaurants and foodie havens source the same wild foods that you’ll discover on your river SUP forage. You’ll find samphire, and sea beet which feature in recipes and on menus throughout the county. Sample the sea-salt tasting leaves of sea purslane found in the reeds on the river bank while you cruise along.
Our reviews on Tripadvisor rank Newquay Activity Centre as number one for Cornwall activities and we’re proud double gold winners of the Cornish Tourism awards. Our Individual Stand Up Paddleboarding adventures in Newquay are days-out to remember!
