2-hour river SUP lesson and tour
River picnic with proper Cornish pasties and drinks
Connect back to nature – low intensity activity
Suitable for all abilities
If you’re looking to take things a bit slower but still enjoy the exhilaration of a water-based activity, this one’s for you! Ideal for groups, families, hen and stag parties who want something a bit different, we’ve combined river SUPing with a relaxing picnic.
What you’ll learn
We’ll get you kitted up in warm wetsuits and buoyancy aids. On the river bank, your instructor will guide you through the tides, the ebb and flow of the river and how to navigate your SUP. After a safety brief and kit familiarisation, you’ll learn how to handle the SUP paddle, make basic strokes, turn, and get to your feet. Our friendly instructors will guide you every step of the way before you even hit the water.
What you’ll discover on a River Gannel SUP tour
Putting those skills into practice so efficiently, your group will paddle upstream and across the river. Along the way, your instructor will point out rare estuary birds nesting in the trees and spot any other wildlife inhabitants including fish, otters and voles.
At Penpol Creek, you’ll discover a peaceful lagoon. There, you’ll see the remains of an old lime kiln and learn how the creek was once the site of a trading post. You’ll also put your new paddle skills to the test and steer your SUP under the overhanging trees.
We’ll even throw in some games and challenges. They’re completely optional so just let us know!
River SUP picnic site – breathtaking estuary views
Moor your SUPs and paddles at the old lime kiln and enter the woods above Penpol Creek. Take a quick ride on the tree-hanging rope swing before heading up the hill to your picnic site.
Enjoy the sweeping estuary views and a well-earned rest. Take a break here with a picnic lunch of locally sourced Cornish pasties. All that paddling will no doubt have given you an appetite! Before you depart, take a few moments to soak in the breathtaking estuary views as the river meanders north towards Crantock beach.
After a leisurely rest, head back to your SUP. With a new found burst of energy following your lunch, it’s time to take a final moment to breathe in the peace and serenity of one of Newquay’s hidden gems!
