Your intensive access course in to the Coasteer industry
Take your love of the ocean to the next level and become proficient in guiding adventures on the jaw dropping, Cornish coastline. We’ve developed this course to share our knowledge with you and fast track you in to the industry.
Would you like to find out a bit more about us or one of our courses?
Our Coasteering Training Course has been developed in line with the National Coasteering Charter (NCC) and it will equip you with the essential skills for safely guiding and assisting coasteering sessions in Newquay and beyond. Newquay Activity Centre are one of the most established coasteering companies in the UK with over 15 years’ experience of leading coastal adventures.
The focus of our Coasteering Guide Training Course is to equip you with the essential technical know-how and the site-specific training to lead and assist on commercial coasteering sessions. Over the duration of the course, you will develop your own personal soft skills, learn how to safely plan an enjoyable coasteering activity, identify the appropriate required equipment, understand how to effectively deliver a safety brief and, ultimately, know how to lead and manage the welfare of your group through successful coasteer sessions.
The Coasteering Guide Course is perfect for those with a passion for spending time in or around the ocean. It’s the perfect way to teach people how to safely use our intertidal zones for recreational use whilst remaining aware of the environment and how to protect it. The coastline around Cornwall holds some of the most amazing views in the UK too so it’s not a bad place to spend your working days!
On top of technical coasteering skills, you will also learn about the impact this activity has on the environment and how, as a professional guide, you are able to minimise the damage to your surroundings. This could include knowledge of forbidden access due to conservation areas, knowing which areas are restricted due to land ownership, encouraging customers to be respectful of the coastline and promoting a ‘leave no trace’ policy.
The course is inclusive of everything that you need; shadow hours with ‘real’ groups offering live experience, essential coasteer safety training, all equipment is provided inclusive in the price of the course (wetsuits, buoyancy aid, helmet, first aid kit etc), coasteer logbook to note your session experience and observations, In-house qualification upon successful completion of the course.

We’ve been delivering training courses since 2001 and we’ve identified the key reasons why our intensive coasteering course takes away the headache of doing it on your own!
We’d love to teach you to be a coasteer guide, book online now or drop us a message through our online chat if you have any questions!

Our purpose-designed building is ideally located within walking distance to Towan Beach, Fistral Beach, Newquay Bay as well as the bustling town centre itself.
Our state of the art HQ, with toilets, heated changing rooms, hot outdoor showers, lockers for valuables and storage for clothes and bags. Although we prefer to use the beach and ocean as our classroom, we do have a nearby training room for our theory work.
If you’ve coasteered before, you’ll know how uch kit and equipment there is, and it can be a daunting prospect having to pay for it all. So, for the duration of the course, we have all of the necessary equipment stocked in our centre for our students to use for free. At the beginning of the course you’ll get supplied with key kit to use for the duration of the course or until you get your own.
Once you sign up to the course you’ll be supplied with a kit list too and advice on where to get it. We’ve got some great and trusted suppliers so there’s even discounted rates for our students too!
Our knowledgeable team is always happy to offer advice on kit and equipment before, during and after the course!
During the course we’re keen to support you in upskilling yourself so we’ll allocate you use of our equipment during your spare time throughout the course.
This is an unusual privilege on a training course like this but we feel it will offer you an excellent opportunity to up-skill throughout the course. Please note this will need to be booked in with the centre for your required times.
Newquay has a wide range of accommodation options to suit all budgets. At the top end, we recommend Oceanside Hotel. It’s perfectly placed near Fistral Beach and has 28 rooms with a cool coastal style, some with balconies overlooking the surf. Plus, our guests receive a 10% discount (chat with us about this option)[1] .
For something more budget-friendly, Smarties Surf Lodge is a great, affordable option. Expect a chilled-out vibe and a range of accommodation choices, from ensuite doubles to bunk rooms with shared bathrooms.
We also recommend Lazy Waves, a small B&B with ocean views and a brilliant location near Towan Beach and the town’s shops and cafes.
Prefer to stay in your van? There is a range of campsites and touring parks within a short drive of Newquay town centre, including Trethiggey Holiday Park.
Please note that accommodation is not included in the price of the course.

To work with the majority of coasteer companies, you need to gain an SLSGB Surf Coach Safety and Rescue Award (or similar). In order to complete this award, you need to be able to swim 200 metres in under 5 minutes. This is quite achievable for most standards of swimmers.
We advise you to train in the swimming pool prior to the course. To participate in the coasteer training we recommend that you have a reasonable level of swimming. You could then train to prepare for the SLSGB qualification if you chose to take it.
You can still join the course. We will supply you with pre course training recommendations that will help you to achieve the standard. No doubt, it is harder to pass if you have never experienced coasteering before, but you can learn everything you need throughout the training.
The activity industry has grown massively in the last 10 years. As a lifestyle business or lifestyle employment it takes a lot of beating. Organised instructors pick up work year-round by travelling to different parts of the world where they are in demand. Or gain year-round positions at centres. Many instructors choose to set up their own operation, as once you have the experience, you just need the equipment and a place to operate lessons and you are good to go.
As you can imagine, the fitter you are, the easier it is. But, that said, it isn’t a triathlon! Our coaching sessions are usually two hours long and you can participate at your own steam. If you need to rest, you can. Our pre course training programme will help you prepare for the course. When you have passed qualification, you will need a lifesaving qualification, this will mean that you need to gain a minimum standard of swimming 200 metres in under 5 minutes. This is achievable for most individuals and sometimes requires some swim training to achieve the standard.
We have an excellent range of wetsuits, wetsuit boots, gloves and hats. We also have a huge range of helmets and buoyancy aids. Just let us know at time of booking and we will reserve your equipment, this is included in the price of the course.
There are loads of accommodation options in Newquay and the surrounding area. Check out AirBnB listings, Surf Lodges, Short-term lets and Spare rooms.
Most pupils stay in one of the following;
An Air BnB (there is a huge range of options in Newquay)
Surf Lodge Accommodation (we work closely with Smarties, Escape and Ocean Surf Lodge)
Hotel or Guesthouse (Check Booking.com for the options or drop us a line for recommendations)
Their van (either wild camping or staying on one of the many local touring parks/campsites)
Speak to our staff if you’d like advice or recommendations.
The relevant lifesaving qualifications are available at Newquay Activity Centre. It works out cheaper to book both of your courses with us. Please contact us for details via our online chat.
Freelance surf instructors generally get paid between £35 and £60 for a two-hour coaching session (which means, with prep and lesson close down you will work for approx. 3 hours). A professional instructor will deliver three lessons per day. If you take a full-time job or build your own roster of clients, the pay can range dramatically. Some instructors demand huge sums by offering an awesome service and getting excellent results. Like any job, the more that you put into it, the more that you get out of it.
You’ll need :
Cover for public liability will be in place whilst you partake in activities with Newquay Activity Centre, this is to a limit of £5 million. Personal accident cover is available, similar to travel insurance (injuries due to accidents etc), this is something participants can acquire themselves by looking online if they wish to purchase. Insurance is a topic covered during the course Q and A sessions so that everyone is clear of how this works in the outdoor industry.
There will generally be ratios of 1:8 (instructor to pupil) for all activity training. However, theory classes may have larger ratios. You’ll often be broken down into smaller groups and all learning will observe the correct social distancing guidelines.
You must be over 18 to join the course. If you are 65 or over, or under 18 we’d love to chat to you about the course before you book. Please email us to arrange a time and we’ll contact you. Or you can call us on 01637 877722
