Newquay Activity Centre have combined 20 years of experience and developed outdoor learning activity programs for schools, running bespoke days and weeks packed with adventures for children of all ages! Activities included are surfing, bodyboarding, coasteering and super stand up paddle boarding!
We work regularly with local and national schools to introduce children to our exciting Cornish Coastline and help improve their knowledge of its heritage, natural wildlife and potential dangers. Applying education in an active way can underpin classroom education and reinforce children’s’ existing knowledge, as well as give back to the community! St Dunstan’s School recently joined us with a group of 42 Key Stage 3&4 students for a day of surfing and coasteering. The visit was an opportunity for them to learn about marine environments and ecosystems in an immersive, hands-on way whilst having a super fun time. Following their trip, the school took the experience back to the classroom and made a case study of their time with Newquay Activity Centre.
We started the day with a two-hour surfing lesson on the UK’s most famous surfing beach, Fistral Beach. After getting kitted in wetsuits, we made the 2-minute walk from Newquay Activity Centre and learnt surfing skills on the sand before heading into the water and practicing them in the exhilarating waves.
The kids then embarked on a coasteering adventure along the craggy stretch of coastline called the Gazzle, exploring smugglers caves, natural rapids and natural ledge leaps before being joined by Newquay’s native seals!
Our professional instructors are local to the area with years of personal experience in and around Cornish waters. They take great care to interact on an individual basis with each child as well as with the group as a whole, to help and support their enjoyment and development in the water.
Beach and water safety is also a key feature to all our water activities and your instructors incorporate their knowledge into every session. Topics covered can be tailored to run parallel to the school syllabus and include wave formation, rip current and tides, beach topography, the roles of beach lifeguards, marine wildlife and basic first aid.
With a firm foundation of knowledge about our coastal ecosystem, children are better able to ensure the safety of others as well as their own, whilst passing on their own skills and awareness to friends and family. But most importantly, have maximum fun!
