Our little section of Newquay’s coastline is a very special one, with its craggy cliffs and rocky caves harbouring some of Cornwall’s most rich and dramatic history.
Along Towan Head is the Gazzle; a sheltered stretch of deep plunge pools, craggy cliff edges, natural rapids, historic sluices and deep caves; the perfect place for coasteering adventures.
This July we were visited by guests from Cornwall 365 to deliver a coasteer full of true historical tales of tea plundering pirates and smugglers who ruled the Gazzle’s deep caverns, witch hunts full of superstition and the heroic lifeboat men who broke their boats but saved hundreds of lives. Cornwall 365 was a group made up of local tourism ‘faces’, media and cultural experts.
There was a nervous air of excitement from the group of key tourism players and journalists who joined us at our centre last week, all not knowing quite what to expect but wanting to be immersed in this coastline’s waters and cultural history.
Professional NAC instructors, Johnny, Joe and Warrick got the team suited and booted and after a thorough safety talk, led everyone down to the Gazzle for the start of the coasteer. The swell was spicy but as the team worked their way along the coast the sun came out and their confidence grew with every leap.
Being two hours long, each coasteer is an adrenaline packed and hands-on way to see the coastline and on their return, the group joined NAC Director Rob Barber for a celebratory lunch in the Carnmarth Hotel to refuel and regale their own experiences of the coasteer!
