Here at Newquay Activity Centre, we understand the power of the ocean. Our bodies and minds love being in or near water, and the sea provides a calming solace. Its physical and mental health benefits are not only scientifically proven, but can be felt when around the sea. Besides this, water based activities provide an opportunity to switch off, connect with nature, bond with others and experience a sense of adventure.
This is why we are delighted to be working in partnership with SeaChange retreats, a company running surf and wellbeing retreats for those whose lives have been impacted by cancer. Through bespoke retreats run by professionals in their field, SeaChange retreats are free of charge, funded by grants and donations. Through their enriching and intelligently thought out weekends, participants are given the opportunity to take time for themselves- to strengthen physically and emotionally; to feel restored and nourished; and to build connections with others with similar experiences.
Supported by research and evidence, SeaChange retreats are organised to improve wellbeing of those affected by cancer, whether it is living with cancer, recovery after cancer or family and carers. The retreats are led by Dr Helen Reynolds, Specialist Clinical Psychologist, Dr Bhavna Oza, NHS Doctor and Dannie MacLennan, Project Coordinator.
Newquay Activity Centre will be working with this brilliant company to provide enriching and supportive surf lessons for attendees, right here on Towan beach, Newquay. Through tailored beginners surf lessons, our qualified instructors will be on hand as participants get their feet in the water and feel the powerful, restorative effects of the ocean. There’s no pressure with these sessions- whether participants want to simply paddle and breathe in the sea air or try their hand at standing up on a board and riding a wave in, our team will ensure that the session is enjoyable from start to finish.
Helen Reynolds from SeaChange retreats is a Surf Instructor and RLSS Lifeguard alongside her work as a Specialist Clinical Psychologist. On their collaboration with Newquay Activity Centre, she has said “We’re super stoked to be partnering with NAC, who are supporting the surf component of the retreat. It’s an integral part of the experience and offers people an opportunity to play, discover the power of the ocean and rebuild confidence in a body that they feel has let them down”.
This particular partnership is special to all of our team. Our director, Rob Barber, says “When we were asked to work in partnership with Seachange Retreats it was a timely opportunity to do something positive for those in remission from Cancer. I lost my beautiful cousin, Rachelle, to cancer last year, so it’s a subject close to my heart. I know the huge benefits of ocean activities to both mental and physical health and the retreats have already shown some really positive results, we’re looking forward to building on this as we move forward”.
Other activities following the surfing include yoga, specialist workshops with medical professionals, dance sessions, sound bath meditation, evening get-togethers, excellent food at 12 Beach Road and wild swimming. There’s truly something for everyone- whether participants want to dive in amongst the waves or simply feel the meditative effects that being near the ocean provides, these retreats are a haven for nourishment, support and connection with the self.
SeaChange are always listening to feedback and using this to ensure that their retreats provide the best support and experience to all participants. Debs, an attendee on the Recovering After Cancer day retreat, gave her testimonial.“I was feeling low and tired with a lack of motivation and nearly cancelled attending, but I can honestly say it was the best day I have had. Challenging myself to do something new, opening up to similar patients with our experiences about my diagnosis and recovery. It made me stop and reset my focus on what was important to me, and see that I am important”.
