Kayaking Newquay – Classic Cornish Cruises // Vol 1 Part I
By James Fisher
In an attempt to take stock of our journey and appreciate how far we’ve come, we have recently been taking a conscious look at our lessons of old. Kayaking in Cornwall is one of the most accessible water sports you can embark on. It’s comfortable, relatively low-energy and the basics are quick to learn. If you haven’t experienced the solace of paddling over the crystal-clear waters of Cornwall yet, check out Newquay Activity Centre’s current range of kayak lessons and tours here.
Whether you want to go kayaking in North Cornwall or find the best sea kayak expeditions in the area, our experienced instructors and guides will be able to help. With over 20-years worth of experience in the outdoor adventure industry, Newquay Activity Centre knows what it takes to provide the most enjoyable kayaking in Newquay experience for you.
Our tours of today have only been possible due to the constant evolution of safety and fun. As we strive to provide the best kayak experiences in Cornwall, we are continually evaluating our lessons and improving where we can. Unfortunately, making way for new lessons often means saying goodbye to old ones. They may be gone, but they’re certainly not forgotten, and today we will take a look back at our previously offered Eco River Kayak Tour.
Eco Inspired River Kayak Lesson & Tour
- Eco-focussed guided river kayak UK lesson
- Explore the River Gannel – a protected area of marine conservation

From crashing ocean waves to the serenity of rivers in the UK, our Eco River Kayak Tour takes a tranquil approach to river kayaking. Perfect for nature lovers, explore Newquay’s peaceful River Gannel, enjoy the beautiful estuary view and discover the wildlife that inhabits it.
British birds identification
On the river bank, you’ll learn basic kayaking skills before our guided instructors take you on a leisurely river cruise. Paddling with the tide, you’ll navigate your way through lagoons and under overhanging trees whilst identifying native UK wading birds including egrets, herons and cormorants. You may even spot rare estuary birds such as spoonvilles or dalmatian pelicans.
Estuary views
Throughout the tour, you’ll have opportunities to pause and explore the sand dunes and salt marshes where the Gannel estuary’s native wildlife lives. Learn more about this site of special scientific interest, and soak in the beauty of the flora and fauna – all whilst developing key kayak paddling techniques.

Our Eco River Kayak Tour was entirely focussed on the ecology that surrounds Newquay’s shores. It was a unique way to learn and observe during an exciting and adventurous experience. We believe the best way to learn about wildlife is to witness it in its natural habitat from a safe and respectable distance. We have since improved our Eco River tour and taken it to the wilds of the Atlantic Ocean on our ever popular Eco Kayak Tour.
