Outdoor Activity Academy Great Western Beach Charity Surf Contest In aid of the RNLI
Sunny weather and incredible waves greeted the assembled Cowboys, Cowgirls and Sheriffs that gathered at Great Western Beach, Newquay on November 25th.
The western themed fancy dress was being worn by employees of local businesses; Â Newquay Activity Centre, Women and Waves, and Bodyboard-Holidays.
The event was organised by the graduating pupils of the autumn Outdoor Activity Instructor Academy course.
This course sees the pupils trained, over 3 months, to become instructors in Surfing, Coasteering, Kayaking, Stand Up Paddleboarding, Bodyboarding, Snorkelling, Bushcraft and other activities. The programme culminates in the pupils organising a charity event which allows them the chance to showcase their skills in risk assessing, group management, water safety and promotion.
With challenges that included the team games of ‘quick draw shoot out’, line dancing, ‘horseback surfing’ and then the individual event of a fancy dress surf comp. The action was fast and furious.
When the dust settled the results were as follows:
Team winners: Rob Barber and Jack Day
Surf comp winner:Â Rob Barber
Best wave surfed:Â Dan Metcalfe
Best wipe out:Â Jacob Waller
Best dressed:Â Amy Kendall and James Nutbrown
The event raised nearly £400 for the RNLI, which coupled with previous event fundraising sees a total of over £1500.
The next Outdoor Activity Instructor Academy Course will begin in April.
