Do you spend your working weeks watching the clock, just wishing away the time until the weekend and those 48 hours of freedom?
Do you find yourself missing the fresh air and the sights of nature as you sit for hours indoors, at a desk or commuting on public transport?
Do you savour every minute of being by the ocean, never wanting your beachside days to end?
If so, our Outdoor Activity Instructor Course may be for you. In just three months you could transform your career, learn lifelong skills in something you love, meet new friends and have an unforgettable experience here on the Cornish coast.
Here at Newquay Activity Centre we know first-hand the benefits of living the adventure life day in, day out. The sun on your face and the ocean breeze in your hair; there aren’t many jobs that even come close to providing you with such a high degree of lifestyle happiness. And this could be your future: our course opens the doors to countless job opportunities, including a guaranteed interview for a lead instructor role with us and plenty of other potential roles with outdoor instructors and surf companies locally. Or, you could pack your bags and jet off to places like New Zealand, Morocco, Bali and beyond. Our qualifications are internationally recognised and highly sought-after, putting you in an excellent position for working abroad.
The course, which runs from 20 September to 16 December, will equip you with everything you need for a future working in the instructor industry. You’ll learn how to coach, guide, instruct and save lives at sea using the Newquay coastline as your very fun but very real training ground. During the course you could get the opportunity to shadow our existing instructors during weekend retreats, as well as the opportunity for paid work with our local business partnerships. We’re here to help shape your future in the industry however we can, no matter your desired job role.
“To have the beach as your office is the dream for so many people, and helping others to make the absolute most out of the Cornish coast is a reward in itself.” says Rob Barber, Director at Newquay Activity Centre. “We feel that various UK lockdowns have really put life into perspective and that perhaps now this course will be more attractive than ever. It offers you the opportunity to put your energy into something that you love. You could make a living out of an existing hobby, or you could change your career path entirely”.
During the programme you will gain a wide range of qualifications readying you for a life of enjoyable work in the great outdoors. These will include your ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Award, British Canoeing Paddlesport Leader Award (this will allow you to guide kayak and SUP tours), a Beach Lifeguard Qualification and an award in Outdoor First Aid.
Our past course attendees have gone on to have excellent careers and opportunities with the likes of Escape, Quiksilver, the Surf Sanctuary and of course, here at Newquay Activity Centre. One of the girls, Alisha, has secured an interview at The Wave in Bristol. Another recent course graduate, Anna, said this about her time on the course: “This course is really set for any ability, you just have to be a little bit brave and have a ‘go-for-it’ attitude. This really isn’t a young person’s or a boy’s thing! I’ve experienced much more than just learning new skills. The benefits are really life changing”. Read about what the girls on the last course, which saw all-female participation, got up to during their time.
Having a good time is our main priority throughout the course, and we guarantee you will enjoy the learning process, even the parts when you aren’t in the water! You will be learning alongside a group of fellow trainees, who may end up becoming lifelong friends, and all course material is delivered by our knowledgeable and friendly instructors. We aren’t about the typical lesson style- whenever the weather is right, we much prefer to be sitting on the beach or on a cliff top delivering your theory work rather than being stuck inside. After all, outdoor instructor life is all about having the fresh air in your lungs and the sun on your face. Why wait until you’re qualified to reap the benefits?
Alongside gaining an excellent qualification, living in Newquay for three months is an experience in itself. From September to December, you can experience the joys of quieter beaches, warm waters, consistent surf, great events and a thriving nightlife- there’s truly no better place to be.
