The free afternoon session was held on Sunday 19th July and gave the children an opportunity to experience a new watersport such as surfing or bodyboarding with the team from the Newquay Activity Centre.

Head Coach for the event at Newquay Activity Centre Rob Barber and organiser Jason Ross wanted to help Diabetic children demonstrate that diabetes shouldn’t prevent them from enjoying a passion for surfing and outdoor adventure, Rob comments ‘It was a fantastic day, lovely to meet the children who had travelled form all over Cornwall. The two key issues that we emphasised to the children is that exercise is a key tool in maintaining a healthy life as a diabetic and you can also live a 100% complete life without restrictions. It was great to take part in such a positive event at Fistral Beach and hugely enjoyed by all who attended’

Organiser Jason Ross who is a parent with a young child that has Type 1 Diabetes, comments ‘As a parent who understands Diabetes, I want any child who experiences a medical condition such as Type 1 Diabetes to enjoy all experiences and I wanted to support this by asking Newquay Activity Centre to host a day for us and to let other children and parents experience their exciting and educational children activities and meet the team of experts. Last year Newquay Activity Centre Director Rob Barber offered their time, equipment and skills to create a memorable day for the children and we are so pleased to be invited back again this year’

Jason Ross chose to work with Newquay Activity Centre ‘because of its dynamic and educational childrens club; Fistral Rangers, has an approved educational partnership with the RNLI and the centre’s expert and highly qualified coaches. It reassures parents and gives them confidence that these highly qualified coaches are aware of Type 1 Diabetes and the possible medical needs that a diabetic child might require. Every child should experience and enjoy such wonderful and fun watersporting adventures’
