Robert Barber and his team were thrilled to be collecting a Gold Tourism Award at the prestigious Tourism Awards held at the Headland Hotel on Thursday 4th November.
“We are delighted to win the gold award for the second year in a row,” said Rob, who received the award by Sir Tim Rice.
“It’s great to be recognised by Cornwall Tourism Awards again, for all the continuous efforts, investment and hard work that our team put in all year round.”
Continuous Improvement of Standards

Customer reviews are a reflection of our service and continuously improving and developing our facility is important to the core of the Newquay Activity Centre.
Mystery visitors and their feedback play a key role in the Tourism Awards decision-making. Our Planning and digital delivery scored 10/10 in this year’s Mystery Shopper reports, along with 9.5 scores for both our ‘WOW’ factor and Overall Experience and Facilities and Entertainment categories. With an overall score of 85% for 13 different judging classifications, we’re pleased to be delivering excellent experiences to the public. 835 Excellent Trip advisor reviews offering 5 stars reflect these results from the Tourism Awards mystery shoppers.
New Activities
“Surfing, bodyboarding, coasteering, all the water sport activities play a huge part towards the economy here,” said Barber.
But we haven’t stopped there. Our team are constantly developing new activities and we’ll be offering brand new adventures in 2017.
The Surf Survivor course if a unique activity offered only by us. How much do you know about beach and surf safety? The Surf Survivor will give you a taste of a beach lifeguard’s key skills. Using rescue boards, Peterson tubes and Lifeguard signals; teams are put through their paces performing first response rescues in the water and first aid on imitation casualties.
“We have a really passionate team, thrilling activities, great customer service and we live in such a beautiful part of the world,” said Barber.
Our corner of Cornwall has a richly dramatic history of plundering pirates and superstitious rituals. Combining the excitement of coasteering, marine wildlife and true tales of the Gazzle’s past, we’ve developed a Heritage Coasteer in collaboration with the Cornwall Wildlife Trust. This activity is also unique only to us, and along with our new Super Stand Up Paddle Board, is a new feature among our list of new activities.
Extending the Season
The Newquay Activity Centre is open year round and we fully embrace winter surfing, bodyboarding and coasteering. With the right equipment, seasonal changes only add exciting variables to coastal sports. We provide full winter wetsuits, hoods, gloves and boots along with all equipment specific to each independent activity, and our heated changing rooms are the perfect place to change before and after.
“We employ some of the best instructors, from professional surfers, ocean marine professionals and those who love thrilling ocean adventure with others,” added Barber.
Our fully qualified surfing, bodyboarding and coasteering instructor are constantly trained both in and out of the water, to continuously develop their professional skills in all weather conditions. A 10 out of 10 score for staff training in the Tourism Awards criteria is a fantastically supportive result.
