Kayaking Newquay – Classic Cornish Cruises // Vol 1 Part III
By James Fisher
Here at Newquay Activity Centre, we understand the importance of progression but we also hugely value where we’ve come from. As is true with all aspects of life, it’s important to reflect on the business side of things and appreciate the journey we’ve taken to get to where we are today. Kayaking in Newquay has been a huge part of our journey and we’ve helped thousands of happy customers explore the beautiful landscapes that surround us.
From beginner kayak lessons, to kayak and snorkel experiences, to kayak and survival skill tours; we’ve created the most diverse range of the best kayaking in Cornwall experiences to date. Kayaking in Newquay is an incredible way to view our lands from the opposite side of the coast. Looking back from the ocean onto our shores provides a unique and enjoyable activity that can’t be replicated from coastal paths or cliff tops. You really get a sense of scale and splendour when you’re out at sea; the power of nature becomes readily apparent with just the smallest of waves.
It’s this power and adventure that we love to share with our customers, and that’s why we’re constantly progressing and evolving our lessons and tours. These recent blogs have been shining a light on the tours of yesterday to remind ourselves of how we got here. Maybe you can use it as your own inspiration, maybe you’d just like to enjoy our reflective journey too; but here is a breakdown of what our previously offered River Kayak & Forage Tour used to include.
Forage experience & river kayak lesson
- River kayaking tour and lesson with a foraging focus
- Discover the unique flora and fauna of Newquay’s River Gannel estuary
- Learn how to forage and sample local wild food produce
- All equipment included – buoyancy aid, helmet, kayak, paddles and wetsuits
Discover one of our most popular activities with a new, unique twist! Learn how to kayak and forage at the same time whilst exploring Newquay’s secluded gem – the beautifully scenic River Gannel estuary.
River kayak and forage cruise
Our instructors will brief you on everything you need to know to get the most out of your kayak tour. You’ll learn to paddle efficiently and make sweeping strokes whilst pausing on the way to spot wildlife, points of interest and identify the unique local flora and fauna. Ideal for those who enjoy a slower, leisurely kayak tour and want to learn how to forage.
River foraging experience
Crossing the river to Penpol Creek, a secluded peaceful lagoon, you’ll paddle under overhanging trees to source and sample wild mushrooms known as ‘wood ear.’ Discover a unique form of celery, which is a threatened flora species according to the UK’s Red Plant data list, before mooring up your kayak and heading into the woods for more foraging. Will you discover the UK’s most deadly plant?
At the end of your kayak tour, take a leisurely cruise back up stream while scouring the seagrass beds of the River Gannel – an important habitat for marine life. Soak in the tranquil scenery before heading back to Newquay Activity Centre.
