Head bodyboarding instructor, Brendan Moore tells us why he loves it so much! “To bodyboard at the highest level demands a great degree of skill and fitness, but at a beginner stage it’s one of the quickest and easiest ways to get used to riding waves. The sensation created by being close to the water is amazing, you’re in control and the fins help you quickly pick up speed to catch loads of waves.”
Among other skills, we teach the jump launch technique which allows you to catch waves from waist depth water. There is no need to go any deeper unless you want to progress to riding green, unbroken waves using fins.
As Trip Advisor’s Number One provider of outdoor adventure activities in Newquay, our Activity Centre is located just 500m from the UK’s most famous surfing destination and the Sunday Times’ No.1 beach for activities, Fistral Beach. Depending on the weather and swell conditions at Fistral Beach, we also run Bodyboarding lessons on the beaches in Newquay Bay just a few minutes walk from our centre on Fore Street.
Flags and signs On patrolled beaches, RNLI lifeguards designate the safest areas to bodyboard with red and yellow flags. We willbodyboard between these flags; they indicate the lifeguarded area for bathing and bodyboarding. Black and white flags indicate the safest place for surfers and hard craft, like kayaks. Having separate areas means we won’t be sharing waves with those using larger, more dangerous equipment so there are no worries about collisions.
No, although we ask that everybody who takes part in our bodyboard experiences can swim a minimum of 50 metres. Let us know if this will be difficult for you and we can advise on how we can facilitate your abilities best. Our lessons can be tailored so that your feet never need to leave the ground except when you’re riding a wave!

Coasteering originated as a combination of mountaineering and orienteering, and was first talked about in the guidebook for climbing in Devon.  The activity combines sea swimming, low level climbing, traversing, natural rapid riding and ledge leaps into deep water plunge pools. We run our coasteers along the Gazzle, the Cornish word for armpit and a sheltered stretch of coastline hosting an abundance of native wildlife. Coasteering in Newquay, Cornwall is a great way to get hands on with the landscape and see our coastal flora and fauna up close. We offer over seven different coasteering activities, including our popular North Coast Challenge and Low Tide coasteers. These use the tide to our advantage, allowing maximum water in the deep water plunge pools for leaps and exciting rapids around the coastal rocks. It’s also been named as a Top 5 beach activity by Cornwall Life Magazine.
The activity started in 1986, when Andy Middleton from TYF began running coasteering as a guided experience. It’s now represented by an advisory organisation, the National Coasteering Charter which monitors operating standards, training standards, upholds sustainable practices, represents coasteering providers nationally to other governing bodies and continually pushes the improvement of coasteering safety. The activity is also discussed regularly at meetings of the Coasteer Charter Symposium.
Lead Coasteer Instructor, Brendo gives us the lowdown: “It’s the combination of going with the flow of the waves as they push and pull you, and being so hands on with the coastline. You’re really close up to native wildlife like seals and lobsters; it’s exciting and nerve wracking all in one. Then there is the darkness and quiet of the caves, with so much history to those caverns it’s great to know you’ve shared them with pirates from years ago.” See our top coasteering tips to know for when you go!
The Gazzle is steeped in history, playing host to the UK’s steepest lifeboat slip, deep tea caverns once used by plundering pirates and the ominous Dead Man’s Cove, a rocky inlet responsible for making wrecks of many ships! During our Heritage Coasteers, you’ll be taken on a journey of historical discovery along the coasteer route!
All our Instructors are fully qualified Beach and Surf Safety Lifeguards, ISA surf Instructors and Coasteering trailblazers. They’ve undertaken extensive First Aid training and we endeavour as an Activity Centre to regularly train our staff so they have experience in all weather and water conditions. All coasteering routes have been risk assessed and developed to ensure an adrenaline-fuelled but low risk coasteer. We also work in close partnership with the RNLI presence on every beach to ensure your safety in and out of the water. Check out one of our training courses here.
Coasteering in Cornwall is an exhilarating and adrenaline fuelled activity during which you explore the inter-tidal impact zone between high and low tides. If done without instruction and expert knowledge of the area, coasteering can be a hazardous activity in an unpredictable environment. Having been recognised as a top centre for cultural activities, our professional instructors will lead you in navigating the borders between coast and sea safely, whilst incorporating ledge leaps with low level traversing, wild swimming and natural rapids. We’re also just 500m from the Sunday Times’ No.1 beach for activities, Fistral Beach.
Yes! Coasteering is a year round activity, you just need a few extra bits of kit to keep you warmer in winter months! We even coasteer all the way up to Christmas. Check out our popular New Year coasteers in aid of SSAFA, the armed forces charity.
Wetsuits – You’ll be given a full body 5mm neoprene suit designed to prevent chill whilst submerged in water. Buoyancy aid – Our non-obstructive buoyancy aids zip up like flotation jackets, designed to ensure you bob in the water and can move freely for climbing! Helmet – You’ll be clambering up and along rocky outcrops during your coasteer, so the helmet will protect you from any unstable debris that may fall during your activity.
All our coasteering instructors wear exactly the same equipment as you, but carry some extra gear to ensure your safety.
  1. First Aid Kit – Instructors will carry a first aid kit in case of minor injuries along the coasteer route.
  2. Peterson tubes – Each instructor will carry a large yellow float, useful as a jump guide for leaps into the water and easily adaptable into a life float for rest and recovery.
  3. Throw lines – Your coasteer instructors carry a 15metre, super flexible floating rope that can be tossed out into the water at a moments notice. It’s an essential part of coasteering safety kit and strong enough to pull the weight of multiple people.
  4. Towlines – Another piece of useful safety kit is a towline, easily attached if a customer requires towing from the water to the shore during larger swells.
  5. Torches – You’ll be exploring rocky nooks and old smugglers caves during our coasteers, so a torch is a useful guide whilst in darker corners.
  6. Mobile phone – One instructor carries a mobile phone during the coasteer, protected by waterproof casing and fully charged in case of emergency.
  7. Goggles – Goggles are an optional extra if you’d like to peak under the water’s surface on a clear and sunny day! The water is very clear in the Gazzle.
  8. Diving knife – Useful for cutting old fishing lines
We’ve found over 80 marine species along our coasteering route! Whilst making the most of the ocean elements the Gazzle has to offer, we think it is important to consider that it’s a thriving habitat. We work in partnership with the Cornwall Wildlife Trust and endeavour to ensure we make as little negative impact on the ecosystem as possible! You’ll be very likely see Native Seals, Kittiwakes birds, lobsters, and fish whilst on your coasteer. Bin Bags for litter collection – Towards the end of your coasteer, we always run a 2-minute coasteer clean-up to give back to the environment and help protect the quality of the area. See our Eco Coasteers to find out how we’re helping protect our coastline’s natural wildlife.
If you have your own suit please bring it along but wait until you’ve spoken with our instructors before putting it on. Some wetsuits are not suitable for coasteering, specifically shorties and triathlon suits. The same applies for wetsuit boots / beach shoes. Some are suitable and others aren’t. Trainers for example, are perfect for the rocky terrain.
Bring a pair of lace-up trainers to wear during your coasteer. They will of course get wet, so you can also hire wetsuit boots or trainers for a small charge of £5.
All you need to bring is your swimwear, a towel and some old trainers to wear in the water. We will provide you with everything else, including a wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet and a rash vest.
You’ll have the opportunity to do a variety of different jumps along your coasteer route that vary in height. The highest we jump from is 8 metres but this may vary depending on the tide during your coasteer. You’ll need to demonstrate good technique before your instructor will allow you to do the larger jumps. So you want to coasteer but don’t know if the big jumps are for you? Don’t worry, all jumps are optional! Here at Coastline Coasteer we use our 15 years of experience plotting the area and knowing exactly all the exit and entry points along the way. Our coaches make sure that at any jump or obstacle, there is a way around, whether you swim to the next checkpoint with an instructor, or climb out and follow the route along the breath-taking cliff path, re-joining the others at the next part of the course. There is something for everyone at Coastline Coasteer; it’s not just about the jumps, it’s about you enjoying this environment in different ways. We can tailor every activity to the individual, just let us know!
One of the other phenomenal experiences that you can come across at Coastline Coasteer on a low tide are the freshly exposed caves waiting for you to explore. Enter Gollum’s Cave for one of the best adventures of your life; you will find it bursting at the seams with vibrant marine life! Beadlet and Strawberry anemones will greet you all around, and the orange breadcrumb sponge, a single living organism plastering the entire roof of the cave, may reveal some unusual culinary delights! Then be amazed by the smugglers’ tales and spooky feel to some of these deep, dark and mysterious areas.
Please arrive at the centre at the start time of your session. This can be found on you booking confirmation email. There is no parking outside the centre so please allow plenty of time to park and walk down to our centre on Fore Street. Once there your instructor will welcome you.
If you have any medical needs, injuries or special requirements, just give us a ring and we can talk through how best we can cater for your needs during your coasteering experience!
We ask that everybody who takes part in our coasteering experiences can swim a minimum of 50 metres. However, you’ll be given a buoyancy aid as part of your coasteering kit so there’s no need to be nervous of you’re not the strongest swimmer!
Coasteering requires a basic level of fitness. During the route you’ll be doing low level climbing and will need to be able to pull yourself out of the winter onto rocky traverses. It’ll certainly get the heart pumping but you don’t have to be an athlete.
From changing room to water’s edge is a 5-minute walk! You’ll make your way down to the coasteer starting point as a group.
Lockers for valuables are available at the centre free of charge to ensure they are safely stowed away whilst you’re down on your coasteering route. There are also storage compartments available for the rest of your gear including clothes and shoes. Please note that any items are left at the guest’s own risk.
The minimum age limit for our group activities is 8 years old. However, we offer private sessions for every activity so no one has to miss out of coasteering in Newquay, Cornwall! All our instructors have years of experience working individually with children of all ages.
Why not combine your coasteer with our Super Stand Up Paddle Boarding experience, the summer’s hottest new activity as featured in the Newquay Voice! Navigate your around Newquay’s historical shorelines and natural caverns whilst exploring the history and wildlife of the local area.
Yes! You can burn even when it’s cloudy! We ALWAYS advise that you slap on good slather of factor 30-50 water-resistant sun cream before taking part in one of our activities. You can also use a bit of zinc for extra protection.
It is generally best not to wear glasses if possible. Talk to your instructor on the day and explain what level of sight you have without glasses and they will advise. In calm conditions it should not be a problem, however we always suggest glasses have a cord/lanyard, or that they are securely tied onto your buoyancy aid. Using disposable contact lenses is advisable.
All our sessions are fully insured and are covered in the price of the activity.
We’re not afraid of some wind and rain, but Mother Nature occasionally intervenes and makes it impossible to run a safe session. There’s much more to kayaking than simply paddling in a straight line from start to finish. Your session can include any of the following. Learning advanced paddling techniques. Fun games and races. Exploring smugglers caves. Getting up close with wildlife in the natural environment, especially the local Seal population and possibly dolphins. Navigating narrow gullies and riding the natural rapids created by the ocean swell. Learning about local history and points of interest. Watching our coasteering groups as they jump off cliffs is also a great spectator sport!
What better activity to do in the rain than a water activity? Rain or shine our kayak sessions are the ultimate activity for the family.
As you will be undertaking your session in one of our sit on top kayaks, falling in is not a problem. You can just flip the kayak upright and climb back in. One of our qualified instructors will be on hand to make sure that you are ok and give you any assistance needed.
We can provide a wetsuit so you only need to bring a towel and swimwear. You can wear your own wetsuit if you have one or if you have your own kayak specific waterproofs you may bring these too. Footwear will also be required so bring either a pair of shoes that you don’t mind getting wet or you can hire from us for £3 a go. Most importantly please bring a sense of adventure and fun.
Our kayaking sessions are open for anyone who is 8 and over but we can take out younger children as young as 5 who will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian and use one of our awesome double Kayaks.
All of our sessions last for approximately 2 hours once you have got your kit on. Expect to be with us for around 3 hours in total.
Of course you can bring a camera or GoPro on the session with you. This will be at your own risk so we recommend that you put a floatation device on it or tie it to yourself so that it doesn’t get lost.
Your trip will take you on one of a couple of different routes that we use. The main route is along the Gazzel which is a large headland just a short paddle from our centre. Alternatively we will take you along a sheltered stretch of river located a short drive from the centre.
Your instructor will cover everything you need to know to safely and effectively navigate your way along the route. Before hitting the water they will teach you about your kayak and its features, fitting and adjusting your backrest, the paddle and basic paddling technique, instructor and client signals, launching procedure, how to get in the kayak and what to do if you capsize. Once in the water you will be taught more advanced paddling techniques such as turning, spinning and reversing which will help you effectively navigate the intricate coastline.
We have purpose built wheels that make moving the kayaks very easy. The kayaks also have carry handles if they need to be lifted into and out of the water, normally just before launching and after landing. We are based at the beach so if conditions are right it is literally 30 metres to the sand!
Almost any game you can play on land, you can play in a kayak. Group numbers will dictate which games can be played. Playground games such as Bulldog and Tag are great for large groups. King of the kayak (dual balancing challenge) is great on an upturned double kayak. Simple sprint races or technical races around obstacles are a fun way to improve paddling skills. We also take a ball to play netball/basketball style games. Please feel free to suggest other creative games to your instructor!
You will be kitted out with a full-length wetsuit, sit on top single or double kayak, a buoyancy aid, helmet, paddle and adjustable backrest.
Your instructor will be carrying a first aid kit, mobile phone/ VHF radio and a Towline that can be used to assist weak or tired paddlers if needed. They can also carry water on hot days and client medication (e.g. Asthma Inhalers) in a waterproof bag.
Our ocean-based route along Towan headland is rich in wildlife. Common sightings include Grey Seals, and an array of birdlife. There is also the possibility to see Dolphins, Sun Fish, Lion’s mane jellyfish, and Basking Sharks have previously been spotted in the area (don’t worry, they are completely harmless and have no teeth). Our river based route in the Gannel estuary is very in rich in Birdlife including Herrings, Iceland and Franklin Gulls.
Our ocean-based route can be navigated on any stage of tide. Our river route on the Gannel estuary is accessible between mid and high tide.
We do not run kayaking sessions in winds above force 3.
Your instructor will continuously be monitoring your fatigue levels. There are several exit points along the route so you will not be forced to complete the full session. Your instructor is trained to assist weak paddlers and can tow you to the nearest exit or to the final landing point.
Your instructor will escort you to a safe exit route from where you can walk back to the centre or if needed they can phone the centre to arrange for you to be collected and driven back.
Yes. If you have a suitable sit on top (open cockpit) kayak you are welcome to bring it. If you are new to kayaking we strongly advise that you take a coaching session before heading out on the water alone. Your instructor will need to check that is in a suitable condition first. We do not accommodate for sit in (closed cockpit) kayaks.
In bumpy conditions, if you are prone to it, it is possible to get seasick whilst kayaking. If you are prone to seasickness we recommend you take whatever measures you normally would before going to sea.
Providing you have fulfilled the minimum requirement of 50 metres swimming capability and you have no current health issues or injuries preventing you from participating in adventurous activity you are welcome to come. Don’t worry, it’s not a race and you are not expected to be an Olympic level paddler! Your instructor will make sure the group moves at the pace of the slowest paddler and will assist weak paddlers when needed.
Yes. Feel free to bring to your own wetsuit but we recommend that you do not arrive at the centre wearing it. Your instructor will check that it is suitable for the activity first.
Your instructor will have checked the forecast before leaving to determine if conditions are suitable for the duration of the session. However, if the weather or sea state deteriorates there is several exit points along the route should the session need to be aborted early.
Single Kayaks can accommodate one person. They can be carried relatively easily by two people using the toggles at either end. Single Kayaks are slightly more manoeuvrable but also less stable than double kayaks. Double kayaks are wide and stable and will comfortably seat two adults and small children are able to sit in front of adults. When paddling, double kayaks are a little quicker than singles as they track through the water well.
All our Instructors are fully qualified British Canoeing Paddlesport leaders as well as Beach and Surf Safety Lifeguards. Our instructors have years of personal experience in the water, and attend regular site-specific staff training. We also work in close partnership with the RNLI to ensure your safety in and out of the water.
We have a purpose built centre on the beach with changing rooms and lockers. Many of our kayak sessions run straight off the beach on our doorstep. Other awesome locations only a short walk or 5 minute drive away. Great discounts for all customers in local shops, bars and restaurants. We are number 1 on Trip Advisor for activities in Newquay.
Yes. We are open all year round to offer all of our activities including kayaking. Thanks to the gulf stream, Cornwall enjoys relatively mild winters with sea temperatures rarely dropping below 10 degrees even in coldest months. We provide you with a thick 5mm winter wetsuit and neoprene wetsuit socks to keep you warm. We also have heated changing rooms at the centre.
Please arrive at the centre at the start time of your session. This can be found on your booking confirmation email. There is no parking immediately outside the centre so please allow plenty of time to park and walk down to the centre on Fore Street. Once there your instructor will welcome you.
Yes. We provide every group with a valuables box that will go into a locker during your session. However, your clothes, shoes and towels can be left in the changing rooms.
For water sports it is generally best not to wear glasses if possible. Talk to your instructor and explain what level of sight you have without glasses and they will advise. If the conditions are calm it should not be a problem, however we always suggest you fit a cord/lanyard or tie them securely onto your buoyancy aid. Using disposable contact lenses is advisable.
Yes! We advise all our customers to apply factor 30 or 50 waterproof sun cream before sessions; even on cloudy days as UV levels can still be high. Applying cream 20 minutes before your session will ensure that it is absorbed and fully effective by the time you start and will be less likely to run once wet.
Yes. The instructor can explain where the session will be taking place and suggest areas where you may be able to safely observe. Whilst most sessions can be observed and photos taken, we strongly advise that you do not put yourself at any unnecessary risk. Kayaking along the coastline will normally take place relatively close to cliff face and you will not always be able to observe the group.
Our cancellation policy is outlined in our terms and conditions. If cancellation occurs 4 weeks or more from the activity’s start date then a full refund will be issued. If the session is cancelled 2-3 weeks before start date then a 50% refund will be given. Unfortunately if the cancellation occurs less than 2 weeks to activity’s start date then no refund can be issued. If the booking is changed more than 21 days prior to the Experience we will make every effort to change the requested booking. Less than 21 days prior to the start, no changes can be made.
If the weather or sea conditions are not suitable for kayaking we will cancel the session and offer you an alternative activity that is available on the same day. In the unlikely event that we cannot offer another activity we will issue you with a voucher for the value of the activity.
Yes. All our sessions are fully insured up to £10million and are covered in the price of the activity.
Yes we do!! Go to our prices page for more information. We also offer great discounts for military groups, schools and families.

Stand up Paddleboarding or ‘SUP’ for short is one of the fastest growing waters sports in the world. Using a very large, stable board (similar to a surfboard) and a single blade paddle you can navigate your way along coastlines, rivers and lakes.
As well as learning about the sport and developing the skills to make your way along the route, you might also get the chance to explore smuggler’s caves, come face to face with the local seal population or possibly dolphins. You’ll negotiate gullies and find hidden coves. You will experience the beautiful environment from a new perspective, seeing historic landmarks and learning about local history. Watching one of our coasteering groups as they leap from the cliffs also makes for a great spectator sport!
Rain is no problem for a water-based activity! In fact, there’s no better way to make the most of a damp day than to get wet anyway! You will get changed into your wetsuit in our warm, dry changing rooms, then when you have your wetsuit on the rain isn’t an issue.
No need to worry, it’s all part of the learning process and can actually be quite fun! You can climb back onto your board relatively easily, but if you struggle your instructor will be there to help out.
Everybody is different and the conditions on the day can greatly effect how quickly you will learn the basics. In calm conditions most adults will learn to effectively knee paddle in the first 10 minutes and be stand up paddling within half an hour.
Don’t worry, every SUP session starts by learni ng how to paddle on your knees and you can still enjoy all the elements of the session knee paddling.
You need to bring a towel and swimwear. Footwear will also be required so bring either a pair of trainers that you don’t mind getting wet or wetsuit boots. If not you can hire from us for £5.
We certainly hope so. As well as learning the technical skills required, your instructor can also advise you on the considerations you should take when going out unsupervised and what conditions are suitable.
Yes. But you will be wearing a buoyancy aid so there’s no need to worry. You can always resort to the more stable knee paddling technique through any areas of deep, open water if you are feeling nervous.
Yes. We require that anybody taking part in any of our water sports, including SUP, is able to swim 50 metres.
Don’t worry, the paddles float, however we recommend you retrieve it quickly before it is out of reach! Your instructor will be there to get it if you struggle.
Maybe. If launching from or landing back at the beach and there are suitable small waves with a clear, un-crowded area, you may be able to practice some SUP surfing. This requires a lot of skill and is not normally suitable for first timers. Your instructor will decide at the time if it is suitable. But be prepared to wipe-out!
There will be no more than 8 people to 1 instructor and Private 1:1 or group sessions can also be booked.
Our SUP sessions are available for anyone who is 8 and over but we would recommend younger children be accompanied by a parent.
Sessions last for approximately 2 hours from when you have got all your kit on. You can expect to be with us for around 2 and half hours overall.
Yes. It needs to be waterproof and securely fastened, preferably to your buoyancy aid with a lanyard or shoelace. Go pro cameras will sink unless they have a flotation device added and even if they are secured to a chest strap we recommend that a lanyard is used. We do not issue helmets with Go pro fixings. If you share your photos after the session remember to use the #newquayactivitycentre
We will explore one of two routes. ‘The Gazzle’ is our ocean-based route along Newquay’s famous Towan Head. We will launch from either Towan beach or the old Lifeboat slipway depending on tide and surf conditions. Our river-based route is on the beautiful Gannel estuary, only a 5-minute drive from the centre.
You will learn about your equipment and how to use it effectively. You’ll be shown how to get on and off the board and how to launch and land safely. Instructor and client signals to communicate whilst on the water will be established. Knee paddling/stand up paddling, and correct paddling technique will be followed by more advanced techniques once on the water. You may also learn about the wildlife and local history en-route.
You can expect to have to carry the SUP board a short distance to get it to the water’s edge. They have built in carry handles to make it easier. Most adults will have no problem carrying the boards and your instructor will be there to help young children or anyone struggling.
Group numbers will dictate which games can be played. Playground games like Bulldog and Tag are great for large groups and ‘King/Queen of the SUP’ is a man on man balancing challenge. Straight sprints or challenging races around obstacles are a great way to master paddling skills. Please feel free to suggest other creative games to your instructor!
You will be kitted out with a suitable SUP board and paddle, a full-length wetsuit, buoyancy aid, and helmet.
Your instructor will have a first aid kit, mobile phone/ VHF radio and a Towline should they need to assist weak or tired paddlers. They can carry client medication (e.g. Asthma Inhalers) in a waterproof bag, and water on hot days.
We regularly see the local seals up close; we have also seen dolphins in Newquay bay, as well as Sunfish and Lion’s mane jellyfish. Basking sharks have also been seen on rare occasions (don’t worry, they are completely harmless and have no teeth). There is also an impressive array of birdlife, especially on our Gannel estuary route.
Our ocean-based route along Towan Head can be navigated on any stage of tide. Our river route on the Gannel estuary is best between mid and high tide.
We do not run our SUP sessions in winds above force 3.
Your instructor will continuously be monitoring your fatigue levels. There are multiple exits along the route so you will not be forced to complete the full session. Your instructor is trained to assist weak paddlers and if needed they can tow you to the nearest exit or to the final landing point.
We primarily use inflatable boards, however we do have some hard boards for more experienced paddlers to use .
Your instructor will escort you to a safe exit route. From there you can walk back to the centre or if needed they will phone the centre to arrange for you to be collected and driven back.
Yes. If you have a board you are welcome to bring it. Your instructor will need to check that is appropriate for the session and in a suitable condition.
Not normally, however in bumpy conditions seasickness is possible. If you are prone to seasickness we recommend you take whatever measures you normally would before going to sea.
Providing you meet the minimum requirement of 50 metres swimming capability and you have no current health issues or injuries preventing you from taking part in physical activity you can come. Don’t worry, it’s not a race and your instructor will make sure the group moves at the pace of the slowest paddler and will assist weak paddlers when needed.
Yes. Feel free to bring to your own wetsuit but we recommend that you do not arrive at the centre wearing it. Your instructor will check that it is suitable for the activity first.
Your instructor will check the weather and surf forecast before commencing to determine if conditions are safe for the duration of your session. If the weather or sea state deteriorates beyond a safe limit there are several exits points along the route should the session need to be ended prematurely.
All of our SUP Instructors are qualified British Canoeing Paddlesport leaders. They are also Beach and Surf Safety Lifeguards. They have years of personal experience in the water, and attend regular site-specific staff training. We also work in closely with the RNLI to ensure your safety in and out of the water.
We have a purpose built centre on the beach with heated changing rooms and lockers. Many of our SUP sessions run straight off the beach on our doorstep. Other awesome locations are only a short walk or 5-minute drive away. Great discounts for all customers in local shops, bars and restaurants. We are number 1 on Trip Advisor for activities in Newquay.
Yes. We are open all year round to offer all of our activities including SUP. Cornwall enjoys relatively mild winters with sea temperatures rarely dropping below 10 degrees in the very coldest months of January and February. We will provide you with a 5mm thick winter wetsuit, wetsuit boots or neoprene wetsuit socks for under trainers to keep your feet warm. Once you’re back from the water you’ll be straight back into our heated changing rooms.
Please arrive at the centre at the start time of your session. This can be found on you booking confirmation email. There is no parking outside the centre so please allow plenty of time to park and walk down to our centre at Towan Beach. Once there your instructor will welcome you.
There are many pay and display car parks in Newquay town, only a short walk from the centre. You cannot park directly outside the centre.
Yes. We provide every group with a valuables box that will be securely locked away during your session. Your clothes, shoes and towel can be left in the changing rooms.
Whilst most sessions can easily be observed and photos taken, please do not put yourself at any unnecessary risk getting close to cliff edge. Paddleboarding sessions along the coastline will normally take place near to cliff face and you will not always be able to observe the group.
Yes. All our sessions are fully insured up to £10million.
Yes we do!! Go to our prices page for more information. We also offer great discounts for military groupsschols and families.
In the rare situation that the weather or ocean conditions are not suitable for SUP we will look to re schedule the session for a time (on the same day) that will be suitable. Or we will offer you an alternative activity that is available on the same day. In the unlikely event that we cannot offer another activity we will issue you with a voucher for the value of the activity.
What better activity to do in the rain than a water activity? Rain or shine our kayak sessions are the ultimate activity for the family.

Still have questions?

Super stand up paddle boarding is one of the newest and fastest growing water sports in the UK, and we’ve broadened our roster of exhilarating activities at the Newquay Activity Centre to include our very own SUP adventures! We’ve built on the success of winning gold in the Cornwall Tourism Awards 2017 + 2016 and launched a super sized inflatable paddleboard for groups of up to 8, to explore Newquay’s historical coastline. From the Gazzle on Fistral Headland you’ll launch the craft and paddle your way into smugglers caves, through natural rapids and around whirlpools whilst learning to balance and navigate the craft. It’s a perfect activity for all ages and levels of fitness, and also acts as a fantastic diving board and viewing platform from which to spy on the wildlife below the water’s surface. From our activity centre Located just 500metres from the UK’s most famous surfing destination, Fistral Beach, we run an extensive selection of Super SUP activities in some of the UK’s best quality ocean swells, and along a sheltered coastline called the Gazzle.
How to get up Start on your knees, keep a low centre of gravity and when you’re ready as a group, hop up onto your feet! Keep both knees bent and use your calf and thigh muscles to rectify any wobbles. How to hold your paddle Place one hand on the top of the paddle and hold midway up the shaft with the other. With your elbows bent at 90 degrees, this stance will give you more leverage and room to paddle comfortably. Basic strokes The forward stroke is a staple and carried out by extending the paddle out in front, keeping the paddle angled downwards towards the water and then pulling it back along the length of the board. To stay in a straight line, work as a team to paddle equally on either side of the board. Common mistakes not to make:
  • Don’t hold the paddle like a broomstick with both hands on the shaft!
  • Don’t stand like a surfer- Keep both feet facing forward, in line with each other and shoulder width apart.
  • Let your large back muscles do the work- you don’t have to let your arm muscles do everything.
  • Stand up paddleboard
  • Paddle
  • Wetsuit – You’ll be given a full body neoprene suit designed to prevent chill whilst submerged in water.
  • Buoyancy aid
  • Helmet
  • Wetsuit boots or lace up trainers
We will provide you with all required equipment (but do bring along some trainers you wouldn’t mind getting wet if you have them) along with heated changing rooms, a warm shower and safe storage for your belongings and valuables. The only things you should bring are:
  • Swimming costume / trunks to wear underneath your wetsuit
  • A towel
Newquay Activity Centre SUP Instructor, Amy Kendall tells us why she’s so stoked:  “Super stand up paddle boarding is unlike anything we’ve done before at Newquay Activity Centre. The craft can fit up to 8 people on and we work as a team to paddle it into some of the most exciting areas of Newquay’s coastlines. The Gazzle is our main playground, boasting a rich history of tea plundering pirates and a huge array of wildlife to see. You’ll probably see a few friendly seals whilst we’re out on the paddleboard! It’s a must-do activity if you’re visiting Newquay or the surrounding areas.”
As Trip Advisor’s Number One provider of outdoor adventure activities in Newquay, our team of professional instructors have over 21 years experience of showing people the best adventures to be found along our special stretch of coastline. We’re one of the only schools to offer Super SUP activities in Cornwall and will lead you through the basics of SUP techniques, providing extensive instruction from the land to the water. Newquay Activity Centre has also been recognised as a top centre for cultural activities and awarded Centre of Excellence status for surfing by the ISA, we’re located just 500m from the Sunday Times’ No.1 beach for activities, Fistral Beach and the smugglers caves of the Gazzle. Check out our SUP lesson taster lesson.
After getting kitted up at our centre, you and your group will launch the craft from the safety of towan Beach and navigate it along our craggy coastline, into deep smugglers caves and through the natural whirlpools. The area is steeped in history and heritage that you’ll explore in depth during our Heritage Super SUP activities! Having learnt core paddle strokes and skills, you’ll moor up for a variety of hilarious games including SUMO SUP, King of the SUP or Mega SUP races, before navigating ocean swells.
The Gazzle’s caves and craggy coastline are home to an abundance of wildlife, from our native seals that call the coves home to jellyfish under the water’s surface. During your SUP experience, you’ll learn how to identify the flora and fauna of Newquay’s coastal ecosystems and witness them up close from the SUP itself. For an even more environmentally focussed activity, check out our Eco SUP adventures! If you would like to get even more hands-on with the coastline, why not combine a Super SUP session with one of our award winning, adrenaline packed Coasteers and experience the Gazzle’s nooks and crannies up close! During our new SUP Coasteers you’ll negotiate your way along the cliffs through means of low level traverses, climbing, swimming and jumping with jumps into deep-water plunge pools interspersing the route!
Your Super SUP lesson will be two hours long. The two hours will begin when you’ve finished changing and are ready to hit the water! If you’re taking part in one of our Super SUP Coasteers, the combined activity will be just under three hours long.
All our Instructors are fully qualified Beach and Surf Safety LifeguardsISA awarded surf instructors and experienced coasteer leaders. Every instructor must have years of personal experience in the water and we also work in close partnership with the RNLI to ensure your safety in and out of the water.
From changing room to water’s edge is an 8-minute walk! We also provide heated changing rooms and safe storage for your belongings and valuables.
Yes! During the winter you’ll be provided with some extra kit to help keep you warm on colder days!
  • A wetsuit hood
  • Neoprene gloves
  • Neoprene boots
Our Mega SUP adventure is a year round activity.
If you have your own suit please bring it along but wait until you’ve spoken with our instructors before putting it on. Some wetsuits will be too thin for certain weather and water conditions.
Please arrive at the centre at the start time of your session. This can be found on your booking confirmation email. There is no parking immediately outside the centre so please allow plenty of time to park and walk down to the centre at Towan Beach. Once there your instructor will welcome you.
If you have any medical needs, injuries or special requirements, just give us a ring and we can talk through how best we can cater for your needs during your Super SUP experience! Our Super SUP activities are also suitably adaptable to cater for the needs of those with disabilities.

We ask that everybody who takes part in our SUP experiences can swim a minimum of 50 metres. However, you’ll be provided with a buoyancy aid at the start of your session, meaning you always have a floatation aid throughout your SUP experience.

Still have questions?

Surfing is the sport of riding ocean waves towards the shore whilst either standing or lying on a board. The ultimate goal is to ride along the unbroken face of the wave and tuck into the tube created, as the wave’s lip breaks, known as a barrel. From our activity centre Located just 500 metres from the UK’s most famous surfing destination, Fistral Beach, we run an extensive selection of surfing lessons in some of the UK’s best quality waves. Whether you’re a complete beginner or professional surfer, Newquay Activity Centre has you covered with instruction suitable for all ages and surfing abilities!
For surfing, you need some swell! Storms and weather systems generate groundswells out at sea, which propagate outwards in all directions like ripples on a pond. The action of wind hitting the surface of water during these storms transfers energy from the air to the water, creating the free-travelling rollers that break as waves onto our beaches! Three things affect the size and strength of ocean swells:
  1. Fetch – How far the wave has travelled
  2. Strength –The strength of the wind
  3. Time – How long the wind has been blowing for
When the swell gets close to the shore and reaches shallower water the waves slow down, increase in height and topple over themselves, reaching our beaches as breaking waves.
Each wave will break with a different profile, but can be categorised as: Spilling – These waves break slowly and gradually, with the lip of the wave gradually toppling down its face. These are long, mellow waves making them perfect to learn to surf on. Newquay is a great place to find them. Plunging – Waves that plunge rather than spill are more powerful, exciting and steep, potentially resulting in a barrel if the winds and swells correspond!  Surging – Surging waves are useless for learning to surf on, so be reassured that we rarely get them breaking on our coastline here in Newquay!
Having been central to the culture of tribes in ancient Polynesia, surfing was recorded for the first time in 1778 by Captain Cook, who’d sailed to the Hawaiian Islands and seen natives riding wooden boards in the surf. But it was over 100 years later until surfing reached Britain’s shores, when two brothers surfed off the coast of Bridlington whilst on holiday in 1890 and another century before it was a cultural phenomenon. When a famous Hawaiian surfer called Duke Kahanamoku won gold as an Olympic swimmer in 1912, surfing found itself published in newspapers and magazines all over the world. A few plucky Brits dabbled in the sport on homemade boards, inspired by the pictures they’d seen, but it was the arrival of four Australian Lifeguards in 1962 that hooked the attention of Newquay’s youngsters and Newquay surfing began! Their flair, cruising surf style, fashion and Beach Boys soundtrack gripped the town which saw a new breed of surfers ride up through the ranks into international competition and become shapers of progressive performance surfboards. Surf Lifesaving clubs were born and beach lifeguards soon patrolled popular beaches. Newquay had become the UK’s cultural hub of surfing and it remains so to this day.  You can learn more about the history of surfing in Newquay in this blog post.
Newquay Activity Centre Surf Instructor, Dom Tatham tells us why he’s so stoked. “Surfing is just so much fun and you see improvements very quickly! I like that once you get in, you stop thinking. Surfing is the ultimate form of escapism, when you’re out there; you relax and forget about everything else. Nothing else bothers you but catching waves and when you do, the speed and flow with which you travel along a wave is exhilarating. It’s a sport for everyone.”

Yes definitely! We pride ourselves on being super welcoming and friendly. Most of our students arrive solo and leave with friends for life.
That’s not a problem, we’d recommend enrolling on our Foundation Surf Training course which has been developed to build water confidence amongst those with less experience in the ocean, or those in need of a refresher. Through a combination of classroom and practical ocean sessions, you’ll develop a solid base of knowledge about surf theory, the beach environment, hazards, and rescue techniques that will help you excel in the ocean, whether you’re there for work or leisure.
As you can imagine you will be learning lots of technical skills from our team. Some are harder than others and we think surfing may be the most difficult to learn from scratch. However, we have proved this to be achievable for first-time surfers during the course. If you don’t pass the surfing skills within course time you have a further 10 months to make the grade. If you think you may benefit from a few extra sessions before or during the course, please check out our Foundation Surf Training course which has been developed to build water confidence amongst those with less experience in the ocean, or those in need of a refresher.
The same applies to other disciplines, such as Paddlesports. It’s not a problem if you’ve never SUP’ed Kayaked or Canoed before. We’ve got plenty of time to perfect your skills, and if you don’t think you’re quite ready for your assessment our team will come up with a pathway to get you there and support you along your journey. If you think you may benefit from a few extra sessions before or during the course, please check out our surf lessons and get in touch, we will discuss how this works. Please bear this in mind for any other technical skill that you think could need improvement.
To work at Newquay Activity Centre as a surf instructor, you need to gain an SLSGB Surf Coach Safety Award. In order to complete this award, you need to be able to swim 200m in under 5 minutes. This is quite achievable for most standards of swimmers. Please note: at many activity centres you do not need this qualification in order to deliver kayaking, coasteering or stand up paddleboarding sessions As a result of feedback from previous courses we have developed the Foundation Surf Training course which has been developed to equip you with the lifeguarding skills you need to pass this section of the course. . During the course, to help you achieve the right swimming standard, there will be both sea and pool sessions built into the course. We also strongly advise you to train in the swimming pool prior to the course.
If you are looking for a career in lifeguarding, you will need to pass the National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification. To do this you will need to complete 400 metres in an indoor pool in under 7 minutes 30 seconds. Although the NVBLQ is an excellent qualification to achieve, this is only necessary if you are interested in becoming a beach lifeguard. This assessment can be quite tough and will require most people to undertake prior swimming training to achieve the targeted time. Both assessments are mid-way through the course so you will have a decent amount of time to train in the lead up. If you are currently wildly out on those swim times, you may need additional sessions in your own time and/or consider getting some coaching or joining the swim fit sessions at our local swimming pool.
The National Governing Bodies (NGBs): British Canoeing (BC), Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS), Surf Life Saving Great Britain (SLSGB) and International Surfing Association (ISA) are all recognised worldwide. Because of the UK’s internationally recognised standard of quality, many countries including Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Middle-East, Canada and most European countries all look favourably at qualifications gained by award-winning British providers like ourselves. Trainees also use their NGBs to get employment with UK companies operating abroad.
Start time: 09:00 – Finish time: 16:00. Please note that these times are approximate and will be subject to change. For example, we may need to start earlier to catch a tide or we may finish later due to sessions overrunning. We will inform you about this when possible so you can plan ahead. Please let us know on a week by week basis if you won’t be available outside the hours of 09:00- 16:00. We try our utmost to make our instructor courses enjoyable and informative. We hope that our students want to gain as much knowledge as possible during this time of learning and that hopefully flexibility will come from the passion to learn. You will get out of this course whatever you put into it and we appreciate your enthusiasm for making the most of the available resources.
The outdoor activity industry is a sector that is growing both here in the UK and in many countries around the world. Having the correct qualifications and experience could potentially see you outdoor instructing in all four corners of the world! This is your chance to change your life for the better and bag yourself a healthy, active and fulfilling career on the coast. After the successful completion of the Outdoor Activity Instructor Training Course, you will be offered an interview for the chance to become part of the team at Newquay Activity Centre, Bodyboard-Holidays or Women + Waves. This will be a paid role and you will form part of our instructor team. We have a network of graduates all over the world and Newquay Activity Centre has great links with surf schools around the globe. This makes it entirely possible to live the endless summer, moving from one side of the world to the other. There are also other international surf schools and centres that we share staff with so we can help you to build a career of international work if that’s the path you wish to explore. If you’ve set your sights elsewhere, there are many other options including contract and freelance careers. The beauty of this course is that it gives you the tools to make ‘work’ work for you! We suggest spending as much time experiencing as many different activities as you can; this is a great way of finding out where your passion lies. Is there one particular area that you wish to explore more? Do you want to work abroad and travel the world? Are you happy just being outside as much as possible? Do you want to head down the management route? Maybe you want to open your own centre? Our course is designed to help you explore the options and guide you into making the right decision. It is for you to answer the question: What do you want to do?
Due to the nature of the job we can appreciate there’s some pretty specialist equipment that not everybody will own. If you already have some of your own equipment (such as a wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet etc) we recommend bringing it with you to use on the course. However, don’t worry if this is all totally new to you; we’ll help you to order the best equipment at the best price. We can also appreciate that costs add up and that you may need to delay investing in your equipment until a little later on. If this is the case, our helpful instructors will be able to sign over Newquay Activity Centre equipment for you to borrow during the course. This is to be kept safe and taken care of until the time comes to return it. Any loss or damage to the kit will be charged accordingly. Leading up to the end of the course and beyond, we do advise that students begin building their own selection of good quality outdoor gear appropriate for professional use. If you are well equipped to start work straight away you will feel more comfortable and confident in your ability. In addition, we have close links with some of the top outdoor equipment brands with pro equipment deals available to trainees.
Our HQ is situated within walking distance to many of the sites we will be using throughout the course. We are located in Newquay town centre with lots of paid and unpaid parking options close to us. We are also just a short walk to both Towan and Fistral beaches, with many surf shops and cafés nearby. On some days it will be necessary to venture further afield to make use of the conditions and the environment. On these days we encourage our students to car share as much as possible (please note our Covid guidelines). This helps to lower our carbon footprint and to split the cost of fuel. If you are happy to take fellow students in your vehicle then please let our instructors know. Travelling won’t be necessary every day but widening our activity net on the odd day will help to expose you to new surroundings and landscapes. Our Newquay Activity Centre van will be fully loaded to supply these trips with the equipment they need. However, if you are struggling for space in your vehicle please let us know and it may be possible to arrange something in advance.
We have our own accommodation option in the form of two luxurious flats. Please contact us for more information. If that doesn’t suit there are loads of accommodation options in Newquay and the surrounding area. Check out AirBnB listings, Surf Lodges, Short-term lets and Spare rooms. Most pupils stay in one of the following; An Air BnB (there is a huge range of options in Newquay) Surf Lodge Accommodation (we work closely with Smarties, Escape and Ocean Surf Lodge) Hotel or Guesthouse (Check Booking.com for the options or drop us a line for recommendations) Their van (either wild camping or staying on one of the many local touring parks/campsites) Speak to our staff if you’d like advice or recommendations.
Surf Life Saving Great Britain (SLSGB) and International Surfing Association (ISA) are all recognised worldwide.
Freelance surf instructors generally get paid between £35 and £50 for a two-hour coaching session (which means, with prep and lesson close down you will work for approx. 3 hours). A professional instructor will deliver three lessons per day. If you take a full-time job or build your own roster of regular clients the pay can range dramatically. Some instructors demand huge sums by offering an awesome service and getting excellent results. Like any job, the more that you put in to it, the more that you get out of it.

Normally students share lifts up there. If you’re wanting to surf whilst we’re up at the Wave you’re more than welcome to book a session, we’ll explain more about the timings of the day when you start your course. There’ll be one of the OAIA staff there to get some epic shots of you surfing or coach you in the water.
