A Spellbinding Start to Halloween in Newquay
On the 22nd of October, Newquay Activity Centre joined forces with Newquay Business Improvement District to cast a Halloween spell across the bay, hosting a Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Tour like no other.
Cloaked in black gowns and pointy hats, a coven of paddling witches glided from Newquay Harbour to Tolcarne Beach in spine-tingling style.
Witches Take to the Water
Members of the public joined Newquay Activity Centre’s expert instructors for the eerie morning paddle, turning heads and stirring excitement along the coastline.
Their ghostly silhouettes and sweeping skirts made for a series of striking images, capturing national media attention with coverage in The Times, The Sun, The Daily Star, and more.
A Dramatic Finale at The Witches Peak
The supernatural show didn’t stop there. As the tour came to its dramatic finale, Lead Instructor Amy Nutbrown channelled medieval legend and hurled herself from one of Newquay Activity Centre’s iconic coasteering jumps.
Historically, suspected “witches” were thrown into the sea to test if they would float or sink. Thankfully, in 2025 no dark magic was required, Amy surfaced moments later, aided by her buoyancy vest and cheered on by the crowd that had gathered.
Interestingly, one of the highest jumps on the Newquay Activity Centre Coasteering route is called The Witches Peak, a name that served as the perfect nod to local legend and Halloween lore.
Community Spirit and Coastal Adventure
Newquay Activity Centre Operations Manager Jacob Waller, who worked alongside Newquay BID to bring the event to life, said:
“It was an amazing event to be a part of and a great way to start this festive autumn period. We’re encouraging our instructors next week to bring a Halloween twist to their half-term sessions, and we’ll be sharing their outfits on our social media channels.
We hope this shows that coastal adventure activities aren’t just for summer – they extend through Halloween and beyond, as long as you’ve got the right wetsuit!”
Spooky Newquay: The Halloween Fun Continues
The Witches on the Water adventure marks the beginning of what promises to be Newquay’s scariest week of the year.
The Halloween celebrations continue with the iconic Spooky Newquay programme, kicking off on Saturday, October 25th, with the town’s most legendary tradition – the Zombie Crawl.
This free event is the only one of its kind in the South West and has become one of Cornwall’s biggest family gatherings. The spectacle is set to bring thousands to the streets for a petrifying parade like no other.
Adventure Beyond the Broomstick
From broomsticks to boards, Newquay is officially Halloween Headquarters – and this year, the magic has only just begun.
